I headed out to a nearby lake on Saturday morning with the expectations that the morning would turn out miserable as I was feeling. Don’t know why, but that was it.
Lucky for me, it turned out to be a very productive morning. A total of seven fish: 3 Peacocks & 4 Largemouth. Unfortunately, when I dragged myself from the house, I left my mosquito repellent/sunblock, water and cell phone so no pictures; sorry!
The Peacock’s were schooling and the Largies were embedded in the vegetation/rocks. Started off at around 6:30AM and the sun was already blazing. Did I mention I forgot my water… Anyways, I started off the morning with an X-Rap Shad. On my third cast, hooked up with a decent 3# male Peacock. After a few seconds of staring at it, I let him go while moaning/groaning to myself because I left my cell (no pictures)
Another five minutes had passed when I hooked up with my second Peacock of the day; a smaller 1-1/2# female (same bait) but she fought just as tough as the first one or so I thought. Threw her in and continued with the X-Rap Shad. Continued the erratic presentation that I had been doing all morning for the next 30 minutes or so with no bite. I switched to a Black/Blue flake jig (I’m trying to get my jigging up to par) for a good 30 minutes with no bites or so I think. Switched to a Watermelon Tiki Worm and after a few minuted set the hook on a 2.8# Largie.
Threw him in and continued with the Tiki Worm for a good 20 minutes. Switched to an X-Rap (Gold) and after a few minutes, something pounded my line. Landed another good 3# Peacock. Then the bite died. I mean totally! Nothing for a good hour. Switched between the X-Rap Shad & X-Rap (various colors), Several worms, Senkos, Jig, nothing…
Decided to try a creature bait in sand color and almost immediately landed two dink largies (1# and <1#) one after another. I continued to dissect the submerged tree where I caught the two dinks for a good five to ten minutes when I felt a small movement. I noticed my line moving and set the hook. Bringing it up felt like another dink but when I see this this come up and jump, I was amazed at the size for the fight. It was a nice 4.12# Largie with one eye missing. Thanked her for the catch, gently placed her in and decided it was time to go.
