Pretty decent mini outing today with a total catch of 5 largemouth at a nearby lake. I took off a bit late this morning so I arrived at the lake around 7:45am. The sun was already out before me and warming up quite quickly. Baits used today were 5″ Watermelon Senko, 6″ Swimming Senko, Berkley Power Hawg and of course, an X-Rap.
As mentioned earlier, the sun was already out and warming out quickly so I immediately started with my X-Rap figuring the Peacock’s were active. Cast for about twenty minutes with no takers. I placed the rod down and picked up the other one with a Senko (no weight) and let it float down next to some submerged trees. Caught a dink but was happy for the first fish.
Threw in the Senko once again by those same trees only to miss a strike on a decent size fish. Pitched it to the back side of those trees a few times and missed another strike. Dropped that and went to a weighted swimming Senko.
Casted out a few feet further and slowly reeled it in threw the branches. Repeating at the same speed, I felt a small push so I set the hook. As soon as I started to reel in, it started to fight pretty good. As it got closer, I see that it was a nice fish indeed. A 21″ 5.4# largemouth.
Now pumped, I continued with the swimming Senko for another twenty minutes or so. Switched to the weightless senko and picked up a 1′lber on the drop. ![]()
Incidentally, I must had not retied the senko from previous uses and as soon as I brought him up, the line came undone from the hook (you might be able to tell on the picture). Retied another Gamakatsu 3/0 and tied on the Berkley Power Hawg. By this time, the sun was really beating down on me so I took a quick water break. Spoke to a local who drove by and he mentioned he had catched some black bass on the other side of the road (small pond) so I gave it a shot. Using the power hawg, I set the hook on dink. Brought it in, threw it back and recasted. A few minutes go by and I set the hook on another dink.
Wife called me and had to hit the road. Had a little more time than usual and hopefully I can continue the thread of expanding these mini-trips…
