Largemouth morning

5lb4_largemouth_030307.jpgWas the the lake at 6:15 this morning because I only had a few hours. For the first time in several weeks, it was nice and hot. No cold front or wind. As soon as I got there, the Peacocks were feeding on the shad in 1-2ft. of water. Next time I go out, I will try and video them feeding. They just explode in the shallow, as you see the shad jump out of the water (almost like skipping across the water). Knowing how they love the Xrap, I casted it out a few times but they were just too far to get to. Unfortunately for us shore fisherman, there is nothing worse than not being able to get to the fish! Threw out a topwater a few times as well but they did not seem interested enough for it.

Well, after several unsuccessful tries at trying to reach the Peacock with everything from crankbaits to rat’l traps, I gave up on them and switched my attention to the largies. Used a Texas rigged senko both weightless and with weight with no luck. Switched colors but still nothing. Changed to a Tiki worm for a good 30 minutes until I got a bite. Missed it, threw it back in. Had another bite and another miss. Switched to a Berkley 4″ Powerbait Power Hawg (pumpkin seed) and casted near the same area. Felt the pickup and set the hook; this one did not come off. It jumped a good three times before bringing it in. This is my hog for 2007: 5.4# Largemouth. Check out the pictures below.

After the pictures, I continued pitching the same bait for about twenty minutes. Then I switched to Gambler Ugly Otter and caught two dinkies not worth taking there picture. After that, I decided to throw out my Xrap searching for some Peacocks. The only thing I caught was a rock about twenty feet from the shoreline. Not wanting to loose another bait, I walked in to about three feet to get it. Talk about cold water, brrr…
