Lunker in the cold

With the switch of daylight savings time, most of us gained an extra hour to sleep, but I used it to get out to the lake a bit earlier than usual. It seems a cold front moved in overnight as it was a nice 68+, so I immediately thought that it was going to be a long morning; here in Florida since there really isn’t seasons per se, only a few degree change can turn the fish bite on/off. Nevertheless, I was determined to go since I was already up.

Returned to the same point I’ve been going to the last month and a half. I’m determined that this area has great structure, banks and is pretty isolated. I tried a series of topwaters, buzzbaits, and even my trusty jerkbait but nothing was working. After about 45 minutes I was about to give up. I then tried to slow down the presentation to a screeching halt. tried a series of tiki worms in various sizes and colors but again, it was cold and breezy. I then tried a pumpernickle with red flake tiki worm and pitched it out a few times.

Finally I get a strike! I set the hook and start bringing it up. I didn’t think much of it as it was hardly fighting but I was pumped anyways as nothing else had hit. The closer it got to the shoreline, the harder is started pulling. I was able to get a better look, then it dove straight down; it was a monster!!!

As I prayed for it not to come loose, I reached and grabbed it’s bottom lip. This pig was a fat 6′0!! I got my composure and took a set of pics with my phone. Placed him back in the water and that was that. It just goes to show you that when you least expect it, they hit.

After another 5-10 minutes of throwing that same worm, I noticed the temperature was beginning to warm up. I went to the XRap and started jerking the hell out of it. Had two or three instances that some nice Peacock’s were following it but I could not get them to bite. Tried a few more casts but decided to pack up and go get some coffee.
